Carey was almost 5'10 tall when she became a leading model. The popularity of her with American designers Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren was very high. Her father, an accomplished scientist, who was awarded the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists 1979 Scientist of Year award, is a renowned scientist. Carey was raised across the globe because of the work of her father. While she attended in the University of Colorado, Carey began to model on the side. The Ford Model Agency located in New York noticed her and offered to help. The model moved to France in 1980. She stayed for a short time in Paris and Bordeaux before returning home to New York to continue with her studies at the college level and her modeling career. She soon began being featured on the cover of Vogue, Glamour, etc. In addition to modeling, she studied at New York University full-time to get a literature degree. As she studied acting at Neighborhood Playhouse, New York, her enthusiasm for acting grew. In 1986 she began her career in acting with a minor character on the show "Club Paradise" in the film "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams. In her spare time, she enjoys skiing, windsurfing, climbing rocks as well as whitewater kayaking.
